Taller Tinta was established in 1913 by the Tinta family in Sangolquí, Ecuador, a region known as the cradle of Ecuadorian silversmithing. The original workshop was founded by Humberto Tinta, beginning a tradition of craftsmanship that would span generations.
Humberto’s son, Joaquín Tinta, later brought his own artistic vision to the family workshop, creating a distinctive collection of brass birds and sculptures. His works became symbols of liberty, reflecting themes of resistance and protest against the Spanish colonization of the Americas.
In the 1970s, Tinta began a significant artistic collaboration with renowned Ecuadorian artist Oswaldo Guayasamín, translating Guayasamín’s modern, abstract paintings into sculptural form. Their partnership continued for more than four decades, until Guayasamín’s death in 1999.
Today, the fifth generation of Tinta family silversmiths carries the tradition forward, continuing to create handcrafted artisanal works in Ecuador more than a century after Taller Tinta was founded.
